The stay

A clifftop resort of warm wood and clean lines above Leucadia’s surf breaks.

Opened in 2021 on the bluffs above Leucadia, Alila Marea is a resort of natural materials, warm woods and clean lines, with an oceanfront pool above the surf. Rooms look over the lagoon or the Pacific, and the restaurant cooks with local ingredients.

The resort’s launch announcement mentions linens made from beechwood fibers and a palette of natural materials, but says nothing about chemical content.1 On our criteria, very little has been published, so the profile is mostly not yet reviewed.

It is here for the setting and the design. A sensitive guest should ask about cleaning, laundry and scent before booking.

What we love

  • A clifftop pool above one of the quieter stretches of North County coast.
  • Natural materials and warm wood in rooms that open to the sea air.
  • A kitchen working with local growers and Encinitas producers.

Worth knowing

  • Cleaning, laundry, scenting and air handling are not described publicly.
  • Coast Highway 101 runs along the land side of the resort; lagoon-view rooms are closer to it.

Amenities

  • Outdoor or low-chloramine pools

    How we know

What we look for. Pools are outdoors, or indoor pools have dedicated ventilation and monitored combined chlorine.

Why it matters. Chloramines irritate the skin, eyes and airways, and they build up in the air of indoor pools without enough ventilation. Outdoor pools, and good ventilation for indoor ones, keep levels low.

Context, not scored: almost every pool in this catalog is outdoors, so it says little about one hotel against another.
