The stay

A French-styled health spa among vines and lavender, with stays of three to seven nights.

Cal-a-Vie has been a destination health spa in the hills above Vista since 1986.4 Its villa rooms and suites look over vines and lavender, among old buildings shipped from France, and every stay is a three-, four- or seven-night package with meals, fitness classes and spa treatments included.5

The days are scheduled for you but everything is optional: hikes, a long list of classes, nutrition talks by registered dietitians and treatments in the bathhouse.1 The property does not allow pets, apart from service animals.1

Two things to weigh. Smoking is allowed in a few designated villas,1 so ask for one that is not. And the beds come with down pillows,2 so ask for synthetic ones if feathers bother you.

Air

What you breathe for eight hours a night: smoke history, fresh air, filtration and anything burning in the room.

  1. Smoke-free property

Not metin some rooms or areas

The hotel says: ‘Smoking is not permitted on property except in designated guest villas, subject to availability.’

Our note. Ask for a villa that is not designated for smoking.

    How we know

What we look for. No smoking in any guest room, balcony or indoor space.

Why it matters. Tobacco smoke leaves a residue (thirdhand smoke) on surfaces and in dust. A study of California hotels found that non-smoking rooms in hotels that allow smoking elsewhere did not protect non-smoking guests from it.

Sleep & materials

    Not yet reviewed.

  2. Mattress materials disclosed

    Not yet reviewed.

  3. Hard floors

    Not yet reviewed.

  4. Allergy-friendly rooms

    Not metacross the property

The hotel says: Villas list ‘Italian Frette linens, down pillows, and comforters’.

Our note. Ask whether feather-free pillows can be provided.

    How we know

What we look for. Allergen-barrier mattress and pillow covers and feather-free, hot-washable bedding, in all or designated rooms.

Why it matters. For dust-mite allergy, US health guidance is to encase mattresses and pillows in allergen-proof covers and wash bedding weekly in hot water (130–140 °F, about 55–60 °C).

  5. Pet-free rooms

    Hotel-reportedacross the property

The hotel says: ‘Cal-a-Vie Health Spa is not pet-friendly. Fully trained and qualified ADA service animals are exempt.’

    How we know

What we look for. Rooms or floors where animals are never allowed, cleaned to a separate routine.

Why it matters. Pet allergen can stay on carpets and furniture for months and travels on clothing. For allergic guests a room animals never enter matters more than any amenity.

Food

Allergen care first; where the produce comes from second.

  1. Allergen-aware kitchen

    Not yet reviewed.

  2. Garden or organic produce

    Not yet reviewed.

So far, the hotel says: Meals are ‘sourced from the natural ingredients grown in our surrounding landscapes’.

Our note. How much of the food comes from the property, and whether any of it is organic, is not stated.

    Shown for information; not scored.

    How we know

What we look for. A meaningful share of the kitchen’s produce is grown on site or certified organic.

Why it matters. A large review found detectable pesticide residues about four times as often in conventional crops as in organic ones. Over a short stay the difference in exposure is small, so we show this as a note on the kitchen, not a scored health factor.
