Reclaimed timber, organic cotton and a kitchen garden, high on the Sunset Strip.

1 Hotels built its West Coast house on the Sunset Strip around materials with a story: reclaimed wood, earthen plaster, carafes made from old wine bottles and a great deal of planting.1 The effect is warmer and more grounded than the neighborhood around it, with views out over the city.

The hotel talks about several things we care about: filtered water throughout the building, organic cotton linen and mattresses it calls ‘non-toxic, organic’.12 None of those statements yet says enough to meet our criteria, and the rooms are carpeted.1 What it does not publish is how rooms are cleaned or whether any scent is used.

It is a city stay built around materials. If you are sensitive to fragrance or dust, ask about cleaning products and flooring before you book.

What we love

  • Filtered water served in recycled-glass carafes rather than plastic.1
  • Reclaimed timber and earthen plaster throughout.1
  • An organic kitchen garden on a stretch of Sunset better known for billboards.1

Worth knowing

  • Guest rooms are carpeted (recycled fibers and ocean plastics, per the hotel), which matters if you have a dust-mite allergy.1
  • The mattresses are described as ‘non-toxic, organic’, but the hotel does not say what they are made of or how they are certified.2
  • Linen is described as organic cotton, with no certification named.1
  • Dogs are welcome.2 Cleaning products and scenting are not described publicly.

NTH Score

60.9

raw 46.0 of 100

A serious wellness address with meaningful non-toxic commitments.

Calibrated so the best hotel in this edition (Santa Monica Proper Hotel) reads 90. Framework v1.2; next review 2027-10.

Non-toxic by construction. Organic cotton linens, earthen plaster and reclaimed timber come with filtered water throughout the building, and an organic garden supplies the kitchen. Its 'Wellness Suite' is a credit package, not an equipped room, so in-room air purification remains the missing piece.

The room to book

The sleep features (organic linens, filtered water, blackout) are in every room. The 'Sleep Suite' and 'Wellness Suite' names on the site are discount and credit packages.

Sleep & materials

The textiles, mattress and floor you spend the night closest to, and how allergen-aware the room is.

  1. Tested or organic bed linen

    Not yet reviewed.

So far, the hotel says: Guest rooms and suites have organic cotton linens.

Our note. No certification is named, so this falls short of the criterion.

    How we know

What we look for. Sheets and towels certified to a residue-testing standard such as OEKO-TEX Standard 100, or certified organic.

Why it matters. Certifications such as OEKO-TEX Standard 100 test the finished fabric, down to the thread, against a list of restricted substances, which lowers skin exposure over a night’s sleep.

  2. Mattress materials disclosed

    Not yet reviewed.

So far, the hotel says: Its mattresses are ‘non-toxic, organic’.

Our note. What they are made of, how they are certified and how they meet flammability rules are not specified, so this falls short of the criterion.

    How we know

What we look for. The hotel says what its mattresses are made of and how flame-retardancy is achieved.

Why it matters. Flame retardants have been added to mattresses and seating foam, and the US National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences lists possible effects including endocrine and thyroid disruption. How much a mattress adds to anyone’s exposure is still debated; disclosure lets guests choose.

  3. Hard floors

    Not metacross the property

The hotel says: Guest rooms and suites have ‘carpets crafted from recycled fibers and ocean plastics’.

Our note. Ask whether any room has hard floors if you have a dust-mite allergy.

    How we know

What we look for. Hard, cleanable floors in guest rooms rather than wall-to-wall carpet.

Why it matters. Dust mites live in carpet, and US health guidance for allergic sleepers is to replace wall-to-wall carpet in bedrooms with bare floors, which can be cleaned completely between guests.

  4. Allergy-friendly rooms

  5. Pet-free rooms

    Not yet reviewed.

So far, the hotel says: ‘Your pup is always welcome.’

Our note. Whether any rooms are kept pet-free is not stated.

    How we know

What we look for. Rooms or floors where animals are never allowed, cleaned to a separate routine.

Why it matters. Pet allergen can stay on carpets and furniture for months and travels on clothing. For allergic guests a room animals never enter matters more than any amenity.

Water & pools

Drinking water, shower water and pool air.

  1. Filtered or tested drinking water

    Not yet reviewed.

So far, the hotel says: ‘We provide clean, filtered water throughout all of our buildings’, served in carafes made from recycled wine bottles.

Our note. The filter type and maintenance schedule are not stated, so this falls short of the criterion.

    How we know

What we look for. Drinking water filtered at the tap or refill station, or treated and tested on site, with filters or tests on a schedule.

Why it matters. Public water systems in California are regulated and monitored by the State Water Board, though older building plumbing can still affect what reaches the tap. Filtration mainly improves taste and removes chlorine, and it replaces single-use bottles; private wells need regular testing.

Food

Allergen care first; where the produce comes from second.

  1. Allergen-aware kitchen

    Not yet reviewed.

  2. Garden or organic produce

    Not yet reviewed.

So far, the hotel says: There is a ‘100% organic’ vegetable garden on the property.

Our note. How much of the kitchen’s produce it supplies is not stated.

    Shown for information; not scored.

    How we know

What we look for. A meaningful share of the kitchen’s produce is grown on site or certified organic.

Why it matters. A large review found detectable pesticide residues about four times as often in conventional crops as in organic ones. Over a short stay the difference in exposure is small, so we show this as a note on the kitchen, not a scored health factor.

Building

The materials a hotel was built and renovated with, how it handles damp, and what third parties have certified.

  1. Low-emitting materials

    Not yet reviewed.

  2. Leak and mold response

    Not yet reviewed.

  3. Building certification

    Hotel-reportedacross the property

The hotel says: It is ‘LEED Silver Certified, with an Energy Star score of 95’.

Our note. Not yet checked against the USGBC directory. LEED is mainly an environmental certification.

    Shown for information; not scored.

    How we know

What we look for. A third-party certification such as WELL, LEED or a green business program, recorded with its level, and its year where the certifier gives one.

Why it matters. WELL assesses air, water and light in occupied buildings. LEED and green business programs are mainly environmental, with some indoor-quality elements. A certificate records what was designed or checked at a point in time, not what a room is like today.

Source 1: Hotel website: sustainabilityUndated · read 21 Oct 2026

Context only. A certificate supports specific criteria only where its scope covers them.
