Viceroy Santa Monica
1819 Ocean Avenue, Santa Monica

The stay
A renovated beachfront hotel that says it makes its own cleaning solution on site.
Viceroy sits across Ocean Avenue from the sand, a short walk south of the pier. The rooms are dressed in a pale coastal palette, the courtyard pool is outdoors, and the beach path is right there for early walks.
Its sustainability page is specific about room chemistry. It says housekeeping makes its own cleaning solution on site with an electrolysis system, that every room has an air purifier or HEPA filter, and that the property is entirely non-smoking.1
Those are the hotel’s statements, and two of them stop short of our criteria: it does not say whether the products are unscented or what the purifiers are. They are specific enough to ask about. Request the purifier’s model when you book if wildfire smoke or particles are your concern.

What we love
- Directly across from the beach, with an outdoor pool in the courtyard.
- A sustainability page that names its cleaning system and its purifiers, specific enough to ask about.1
- A 100% non-smoking property, by the hotel’s account.1
Worth knowing
- The hotel says every room has ‘an air purifier or HEPA filter’, but not which model or whether any unit makes ozone, which harms the lungs.1 Ask for the model before you book.
- Electrolyzed-water systems usually produce a dilute hypochlorous solution: low-residue, but still a disinfectant. Ask what is used in bathrooms.
- The hotel’s sustainability page is undated, so practices may have changed.1
Amenities
- Smoke-free property
- Outdoor or low-chloramine pools

Air
What you breathe for eight hours a night: smoke history, fresh air, filtration and anything burning in the room.
Smoke-free property
Hotel-reportedacross the property
The hotel says: ‘The property is 100% non-smoking.’
How we know
What we look for. No smoking in any guest room, balcony or indoor space.
Why it matters. Tobacco smoke leaves a residue (thirdhand smoke) on surfaces and in dust. A study of California hotels found that non-smoking rooms in hotels that allow smoking elsewhere did not protect non-smoking guests from it.

In-room air purifier
Not yet reviewed.
So far, the hotel says: Every room has ‘an air purifier or HEPA filter’.
Our note. Whether each unit is true HEPA, and whether any emits ozone, is not stated, so this falls short of the criterion.
How we know
What we look for. A true-HEPA purifier in the room or on request, with no ozone-generating or ionizing function.
Why it matters. Portable HEPA units lower indoor particle levels, which matters most during wildfire smoke. Ionizers and ozone purifiers can add an irritant gas instead.

Cleaning & care
How a room is cleaned, treated and prepared, and whether a request for a gentler clean is actually honored.
Low-chemical housekeeping
Not yet reviewed.
So far, the hotel says: Housekeeping makes its own cleaning products with an in-house Electrolyzer system, and describes them as ‘non-toxic and hypoallergenic’.
Our note. Whether the products are unscented is not stated, and no product list is published, so this falls short of the criterion. Electrolyzed-water systems usually make a dilute hypochlorous solution: low-residue, but still a disinfectant.
How we know
What we look for. Unscented, low-hazard cleaning products and no aerosols, with a product list the hotel will share.
Why it matters. In a ten-country study, weekly use of household cleaning sprays was linked to new asthma symptoms in adults. Residue and scent from cleaning also linger for the next guest.

Outdoor or low-chloramine pools
Hotel-reportedacross the property
The hotel says: The pool is an outdoor courtyard pool, and ‘an active plan has been established to reduce chlorine usage in the swimming pool and fountains’.
Shown for information; not scored.
How we know
What we look for. Pools are outdoors, or indoor pools have dedicated ventilation and monitored combined chlorine.
Why it matters. Chloramines irritate the skin, eyes and airways, and they build up in the air of indoor pools without enough ventilation. Outdoor pools, and good ventilation for indoor ones, keep levels low.

Context, not scored: almost every pool in this catalog is outdoors, so it says little about one hotel against another.
